And DFF comes into the 21st Century!
Our beloved Disch-Falk Field is getting a little spruced up this weekend. Let's see... the Longhorn Baseball program has 5 National Championships... the most recent 2002... the stadium they play in, while very large, (holds about 7500 at capacity) is ummmm... OLD AND DECREPIT! By comparison, the football team's last national championship was in 1970...lo and behold, the Disch is in the process of receiving a new scoreboard! It will probably be one of those video scoreboards with tons of cheesey shit on it, but it will be kinda nice to be able to read the players' stats. The current one has so many "burnt" (used on purpose for burnt orange) out bulbs that it serves as a wagering enticer "So, how many homeruns does this batter have? RBI?" Usually it's missing just the right bulbs to where the 8 looks like zero... Even better, I think there are maybe 35 rows? going up in the grandstand. We sit on row 16. The painted numbers on the aisle stop at 14. It's always a hoot to watch the visiting fans stop dead in their tracks and go "shit! okay, that's 14.. 15... 16..." and on up to their row. You'd think a championship program at a university like Texas could at least afford to finish stenciling the numbers on the aisles... but it's been that way for years. So, nice fodder for us old-timers. So now the University has finally sprung for a half-million dollar scoreboard that was promised after the 2002 National Championship. I guess I am in a minority, being a UT baseball fanatic. I donate to the Longhorn Foundation every year, direct it to the baseball program, and buy my beloved seats each season as well. They were my mom's before 2001. She started buying them in 1985.
There is talk of renovations on the stadium, which quite frankly I'm not so sure about. Club seating, serving alcohol, etc. The Disch has a certain 30 year old personality that I like. It's predictable. There is always a line for the potty, (they only have 2 each) the hotdogs are over priced and cold, any alcohol consumption normally takes place in the parking lot (see previous post on tail-gating), but it's soooooooooooo AUSTIN.
{{{{ LOOK OUT! INCOMING RANT}}}}} So. Most people who know me even a little know I am a native Austinite. Yes, I can remember when the population signs read 100,000. I can remember when MoPac was a dream. I can remember when I-35 did not have an "upper deck", and there was no "flyover" at 183 and MoPac. Well hell, there was no MoPac. Right about where South 360 starts to turn to the Toys R Us hill? That was a dead end rock wall. "Manchaca Road" was a dirt road to Manchaca after William Cannon. and on and on and on I could go. {{{{ END OF RANT}}}} So I'll admit that as a 40+ year old, I'm a tad adverse to change. Here are a couple of pictures of the scoreboard that started this rant. That is all. Carry on. Nothing to see here. side note: After all this ranting and raving, the UT baseball team lost tonight on the road at Kansas, 5-2. WTF.
