The Race is On...

Well, that may not be an accurate statement, but here goes. UT baseball has eight regular season, conference games left. (and 3 non-conference) So in the old days, we would be talking about the race to win the Big 12, (more accurately the Southwest Conference...but anyway) and thus be granted a regional playoff. It could have been exciting. Thanks to a bad start with conference play this year - they dropped three! to Baylor at the opener - the rest of the conference play has been "must win must win". BUT... now the NCAA has the stupid Championship Tournament. Much like basketball does. All you have to do is be in the top 8 in the Big 12, and you are in the tournament. Then it's a clean slate, and whomever wins that tournament is the Big 12 Champ. Funny thing about the "Top 8?" There are only 10 baseball teams in the Big 12 Conference. Anyway, while your regular season play "supposedly" carries more weight on whether or not your team is awarded a regional, I still hate the tournament idea. To me it's just another money maker for the NCAA and has little to do with finding the true "best team". So, okay. there. I know there are certainly more pressing issues in the world, but lest you forget, I am a baseball fanatic. (grins widely)

So, the standings as of today: #1 - Baylor W14 - L5; #2 Texas W12 - L6; #3 Nebraska W11 - L6; #4 Missouri W10 - L6; #5 - Okla State W9 - L10; #6 (tie) Texas Tech W7 - L10 & Okla U W7 - L10; #8 (tie) Aggies W7 - L12 & Kansas State W7 - L12 and #10 Kansas with 4 wins and 11 losses. I think that being a UT fan, I am very spoiled. We almost always win. At most sports. Considering I have been a UT sports fan basically since before I was born, I don't know any different. So many of my Memorial Day weekends over the last 25 years have been spent at Disch-Falk Field, grilling grub, drinking beer, getting sunburned... with my family. The organization of NCAA baseball has changed quite a bit over the years, but the TAILGATING HAS NOT!
I guess that's the bottom line. I still enjoy baseball for the game it is, even though the powers that be keep screwing with the system.

Here's the key player from last night, Seth Johnston. He was 1 for 4, but had 2 RBI which is more important! (and actually another player, Chance Wheless also went 1 for 4 with 2 RBI... the final score against Missouri was 4-1)

Okay, guess I'm done now. There is a more pressing issue today, other than the UT baseball team needing to beat Missouri again. Baby Cuzzin's baby boy is 2 today!

CAYLE
We are all going to the baseball game at 2, then Cayle's party is at 5 at Austin Park and Pizza. Then... Bag100 plays at Bigsby's on 6th Street later tonight. Hopefully I can drag some of my cousins down there for the show. The Pecan Street Festival is happening this weekend downtown. Ben will be busy with that most of the weekend... maybe I'll see him next week?

Oh, and my handsome nephew Brett turned 18 yesterday! I can't believe it. I have not received any phone calls from the family, so I'm assuming he survived the night. I'll post some photos of him later.

The band Nooner, ever the publicity ho's, :-), staged a cool event last night outside La Zona Rosa. Jimmy Eat World played a sold out show (re-scheduled from January) so Nooner decided to entertain those waiting in the long lines to get in. They pulled up in a trailer directly across from La Zona Rosa and the entry gates... very cool! They handed out CD's, played about 8 songs, and drove off. (edit) I should say Kristin and Liz did the handing out of the cd's, and could have handed out a ton more! Here's a thread on the AIA boards about it.

BEAT THE HELL OUTTA O.U.!

and we did!
Here is where I spent a large portion of this past weekend... which was a great one for Texas Baseball. They went 10 innings on Friday night, finally winning in the bottom of the 10th with Drew Stubbs' homer OVER the scoreboard in center field.
000_0034I mean, even if you don't know much about baseball, just look how high that is. Pretty amazing.

Oh, here are my two seats...
my weekend seat

We did some tail-gating on Saturday. The game started at 6pm, but I had the brilliant idea that I needed to get to the park by noon-ish to secure our favorite tail-gater's spot. I'm out there all comfy, got all that is needed for a good tailgate: Small BBQ pit, water, sausage, tortillas, dvd player with Seinfeld in it, lawn chairs, music, charcoal, lighter fluid.... (the beer was on it's way) Ah, nice cool Saturday to just hang out and relax. At about 1:30 I decided to go put charcoal in the pit... opened the new portable one I bought especially for tail-gating... and there was no freakin' grill in it! Doh! I took it out to clean it and sorta forgot to put it back in. Hence the next photo....
000_0041 Luckily David was not quite to the ballpark yet. He went to HEB and saved the day with this little $10 jobby that worked beautifully. In Saturday's game the freshman pitcher, Adrian Alaniz, pitched a complete no-hitter. Not too many people accomplish that in college baseball, what with aluminum bats and all. Very exciting game. Sunday's game was a bit sloppier, but fun all the same. And UT won yet again. Baby Cuzzin brought her cutie pie little boy, and he had a great time! He still speaks that baby-Italian talk, but his attempts to yell Hook 'em! were getting clearer and clearer... AND we swept Blow-U! They may own us in Football... but at least we beat them all three games in baseball. Which, in reality, is the superior sport. So now it stands that UT baseball is #1 in the country yet #4 in the Big 12. (that, btw, only has 10 baseball teams) I think that is hilarious. (the #1 vs #4 part, not the only having 10 teams part) (that is all)

And in other news... the countdown to Vega$ is 31 days and to Disney is 181.

Gone to the Dogs....

Well well... who'd a thunk it? Kristin has been scouring Petfinders.com for a while now, and fell in love with this certain little border collie mix who now carries the name of Lucy. She finally made the trek to Gonzales on Sunday. The funny twist is that Christine went with her (C=never had a dog before) and... came home with the other furball in that photo!! The blonde furball's name is Sierra. K's cat, Slinkey, is still not so sure about this new roommate, as you can see in other photos on K's site... (photos) While Old Man Sebastian, "Mr. Kitty" at the CNN home, will never be sure! I was on schedule to go with Kristin on other planned missions to Gonzales but never made it. And for that I am thankful... C & K report there is a Beagle mama there with 10 mix breed puppies. I'm sure I would have claimed one... and that would have made our menagerie very unhappy! Speaking of, here are photos of our babies.

Old lady Peso will be 15 on May 3rd.....I have had her since she was 5 weeks old.

Max... well, he's Max. He came to live with me in 1999 "temporarily"... He's about 10 and very sweet.

And lastly, the King of the House... Elway!

BAG100 ROCKS ANTONE'S!

What a great show Thursday! Lizard the opera singer joined Bag100 on stage for the song "We All go to Pieces" and it was fantastic! Ben tells me that is only the 2nd time they have played that song on stage, but I swear I've heard it lots of times. Figured out C probably has it on CD and I've listened to it several times. I like the song a lot. A couple of other bands we know, Triggerfish and Motionside, played rockin' shows as well. And best of all... I kidnapped Special K's Mike Wazowski toy from her McD's happy meal. (Click the photo link for more pictures from the show)
